This dress was donated to The Zay Initiative in 2021 by an anonymous follower who introduced herself as Di.

Although we have since lost contact with her, we believe she acquired the dress from an Artisanat Zghorta store—a renowned workshop established in the city of Zghorta in 1966—during her time living there as an expatriate.

We are seeking passionate individuals to assist us in our mission to preserve the cultural heritage of traditional Arab dress and tell the stories behind the garments.

Jewellery and Lebanon

Jewellery traditions extend far beyond the geographical borders we recognise today, with many regions embodying multiple cultural influences. The historical context and cultural heritage of diverse communities are reflected in the jewellery they wear, and through this post, we aim to introduce you to this broader perspective on adornment and dress. Here, we explore the rich and enduring history of jewellery in Lebanon.

Kisrawaniyeh

The term “kisrawaniyeh” originates from the Keserwan district, part of the Kisrawan or Keserwan region, located between Mount Lebanon and the Mediterranean coast in present-day Lebanon. This area was once celebrated for its flourishing textile industry.

It is believed that the futah originally referred to the white veil worn by Druze women in northern Syria, while the kisrawaniyeh may have been the red veil traditionally worn by Druze women in the Keserwan area of Mount Lebanon. These veils were likely produced in the textile workshops or on the looms of Keserwan.
